Winter Driving Across the Balkans

Balkan winters can be brutal, especially in mountainous regions. Heavy snowfall, black ice, and freezing fog are common from November through March. Being prepared is not optional — it is essential for your safety.

Winter Tire & Chain Requirements by Country

Serbia

Winter tires mandatory November 1 – April 1. Snow chains must be carried in the vehicle. Minimum tread depth: 4mm.

Croatia

Winter equipment mandatory November 15 – April 15. Winter tires or all-season tires with M+S marking required. Chains must be available on mountain roads.

Slovenia

Winter tires mandatory November 15 – March 15. Fine for non-compliance: up to €500. Chains must be carried on mountain passes.

Bulgaria

Winter tires mandatory November 15 – March 1. Minimum tread depth: 4mm. Chains required on certain mountain routes.

North Macedonia

Winter tires mandatory October 15 – March 15. Chains must be carried. Roads can close without warning during heavy snow.

Greece

No national winter tire mandate, but chains are required on many mountain roads. Signs indicate when chains are needed.

Winter Driving Survival Tips

  • Carry an emergency kit: Blanket, flashlight, water, snacks, phone charger, ice scraper, and de-icer
  • Check weather and road conditions before every journey
  • Keep fuel above half tank: You may need to idle for warmth if stuck
  • Practice installing chains before you need them — doing it for the first time in a snowstorm is miserable
  • Reduce speed dramatically: Braking distance on ice can be 10x normal
  • Use RoadRadar: Community reports about icy patches, snowplows, and road closures help you plan ahead

Mountain Passes to Watch

Some mountain passes close entirely during heavy snow. Keep an eye on conditions for: Kačanik Gorge (Kosovo-NMK), Stara Planina (Serbia-Bulgaria), Vršič Pass (Slovenia), and the E65 through Demir Kapija (North Macedonia).
