Plan Before You Cross the Border

A Balkan road trip can take you through four or five countries in a single day. Each border has its own paperwork expectations, and being unprepared can turn a quick crossing into a long wait — or a fine. Here is what every tourist driver should carry.

Documents You Must Have

• Valid driving licence — an International Driving Permit is recommended alongside your national licence, especially outside the EU.
• Vehicle registration (log book) proving ownership.
• Passport or national ID for every person in the car.
• Proof of insurance — see the Green Card note below.

The Green Card and Insurance

The Green Card is an internationally recognised proof of motor insurance. Several Balkan countries outside the EU require it, and border officials may ask to see it. Check with your insurer before departure and confirm which countries your policy covers — some exclude certain Balkan states unless you request an extension.

Vignettes and Tolls

Many countries require a vignette (a road-use sticker or electronic pass) to drive on motorways. Driving without one is fined heavily, even for a few kilometres. Buy yours at the border, a petrol station, or online before you cross. Some countries use toll booths instead of vignettes, and a few use both on different roads.

At the Border

• Have all documents within easy reach — not buried in the boot.
• Expect longer queues in peak summer months, especially on weekends.
• Keep engine emissions and warning-triangle/reflective-vest requirements in mind — some countries check.
• Be patient and polite; border procedures vary and can be slow.

Equipment Rules to Remember

Most Balkan countries legally require you to carry a warning triangle, reflective vest, first-aid kit and spare bulbs. A few require two triangles or a fire extinguisher. Winter months may add snow-chain or winter-tyre rules. Check each country on your route before you leave.
