What changes when you cross the border

Serbia and Montenegro do not share the same rules. These are the differences that cost drivers most often.

Border crossings

The main crossings on this route are Gostun–Dobrakovo and Jabuka–Ranče. Gostun is the busiest in summer — multi-hour queues are common in July and August.

Speed limits

Serbia: 130 km/h on motorways, 100 on expressways. Montenegro: 100 km/h is the maximum — there are no 130 motorways. Many drivers miss this right after the border.

Daytime headlights

Both countries require dipped headlights during the day, all year round. The fine is smaller than a speeding one but is often issued near the border.

Tolls

Serbia charges tolls per section (ENP tag or ticket). Montenegro has no vignette, but the Sozina tunnel is charged separately — 2.50 € for a car, 1 € for a motorcycle, 5 € with a caravan or trailer.

Mountain sections

The stretch through Bijelo Polje and the Morača canyon has tight bends and frequent mobile cameras. Real average speed is lower than your navigation predicts.

Phone at the wheel

Both countries ban holding a phone. Montenegro applies harsher penalties for repeat offences.
